Te tino o Kaipara: Save the Kaipara with Legal Personhood
The issue
Tihei Mauri Ora
Our own Ngāti Whātua tribal histories and traditions affirm that the Kaipara Harbour, along with its waters, is the cornerstone of wellbeing for our whānau (families) and the mokopuna (future generations). Its significance is deeply embedded in our cultural and spiritual identity. However, the Kaipara has suffered severe neglect over the decades. It is disheartening to witness what was once the cradle of our sustenance and heritage, now in a state of distress—the vital living species of animals, fish, and flora are disappearing; the waters are becoming choked with sediments, runoff, and pollutants.
We, as Kaitiaki (stewards) of the land and water, believe that an indigenous world view combined with legal protection practices can save the Kaipara Harbour. Inspired by the legislative successes of Wanganui Awa Tupua, Kahui Tipua in Taranaki, and the Urewera in Tuhoe lands, we call upon the Iwi and government to take decisive action. Our aim is to embed the protection for Kaipara Harbour in legislation by granting it legal personhood, thus recognizing its rights and ensuring its protection for future generations.
Our proposal begins with seeking the support of the Kaipara Uri and communities. Their backing is crucial to initiate the cultural and then legal process and to represent the unified interest of Kaipara uri, hapū, and all New Zealanders who cherish Kaipara. By acknowledging the harbour as a living entity with legal rights, we can institute sustainable guardianship, protecting it from further harm.
We urge you, whether you are Kaipara uri, a local resident, a member of the wider community, or a concerned global citizen, to stand with us in this cause. Support this important step towards sustainability and justice for the Kaipara Harbour. Sign this petition to demonstrate your commitment to preserving our natural world and rectifying years of environmental oversight. Together, we can ensure that this vital ecosystem thrives once more.
