Tax Ultra-Processed Foods to Subsidise Real Foods

The Issue

The rising health crisis gripping our nation can be largely attributed to the consumption of ultra-processed foods and drinks. Countless studies have showcased that such products, containing harmful chemicals and ultraprocessing of ingredients, are at the core of the escalating rates of mental and physical health disorders across the country. More than ever, the need to have access to fresh, real foods and drinks is not a luxury but a necessity.

Ultra-processed products have been proven to contribute to the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancers and other life-threatening conditions. According to the British Medical Journal, people consuming large amounts of such foods (more than four servings per day) have a whopping 62% increased risk for all-cause mortality compared to those consuming less than two servings per day.

Given these staggering statistics, I firmly believe that taxing ultra-processed foods can serve as a powerful deterrent. The revenue generated can be directed towards subsidising real foods, effectively making them more affordable for all segments of the society, thus promoting healthier lifestyles.

Adopting this strategy would not only help reverse the current health crisis but also significantly reduce the overwhelming financial burden on the National Health Service (NHS). We must act now. Let's make the necessary changes to our food system. I urge you to support this petition, for the sake of the nation's health and the sustainability of our public healthcare system. Please sign this petition, your voices can bring about the change we desperately need.
