Community Call for Inquiry into Wildlife Welfare & Conservation “Management” in Tasmania.

Community Call for Inquiry into Wildlife Welfare & Conservation “Management” in Tasmania.
The issue
Hello friends.
The local, national and global community is growing ever more concerned about the disrespect and apathy being shown towards Tasmania’s unique native animals by Local and State authorities.
It’s time to call for an independent investigation and review of current wildlife “management” practices in Tasmania.
Year after year authorities ignore animal welfare and conservation concerns raised by the community. These concerns include (but are not limited to).
1. Refusal to end the use of packs of dogs to hunt native animals, despite these archaic methods openly breaching Animal Welfare legislation, and being long banned in other developed nations.
2. Refusal to appropriately investigate and act upon Animal Welfare breaches within the Primary Industries Sector.
3. Refusal to install sufficient wildlife road safety measures to lower the estimated half million native animals lost to vehicle impacts every year in Tasmania, and to protect road users.
4. Recent state endorsement of the “Tasmanian Wildlife Trade Operation Proposal” that will see free roaming native animals “harvested” for the pet food, game meat and fur industries. Under this proposal up to 3 million partially protected Tasmanian native animals will be “culled” every 5 years to supply this business venture. This barbaric plan has shocked animal lovers in Tasmania, and around the world.
5. Refusal to provide COVID relief support for Tasmanian volunteer community wildlife carers and rescuers despite handing our extraordinary amounts of public money to the private sector.
6. Refusal to contribute to the costs of rehabilitating injured and orphaned native animals, instead expecting community volunteers and private vet clinics to absorb the entirety of these costs, despite these animals officially “belonging” to state authorities.
7. Refusal to end the use of 1080 poisons against native animals (outlawed elsewhere in the world).
8. An increasingly dismissive and rude attitude directed towards community members who raise any of the above concerns.
Please sign and share this petition if you would like to see these attitudes and approaches change in Tasmania.
