System Wide Judicial and Prison Reform

The Issue

We need to examine what our judicial and prison system has become.  Prisons have become the top growth industry in the U.S.  Unjust laws and regulations have increased: three strikes you're out; prison for minor drug offenders; the war on drugs itself; limits on appeals and refusal of the courts to look at new evidence no matter how compelling.  We all can see that the system as it stands boils down to "as much justice as money can buy".  Largely speaking--no money, no justice.
The growth of our prison population, privately run prisons and changes in the laws that have brought this situation about speaks to me of rottenness and corruption at the highest levels and profiteering at the expense of those who are unable to defend themselves.  The government has created a new industry for prison profiteers and thru the judicial system has created for these profiteers a guaranteed pipeline of "business".
This link needs to be examined and abolished.  The cases of prisoners incarcerated under these rules should be reviewed and corrected.
It should go without saying that the death penalty should be abolished.
We need reforms within prisons for education, counseling, and anything else that might affect a change in the revolving-door situation that we now have.  Prisoners should be free from the threat of rape and other violence so common in our prisons.  We should consider Vipassina Meditation which has been tried in prisons in India and a few in the states with positive results.
In essense, I propose to examine the structure of our prison system and the appearance of collusion between it and the so-called justice system.  I propose that we change the focus of the prison system from warehousing and punishment to education and reform.  All we are doing now is feeding a for-profit industry that jails masses of poor people and turns out career criminals.  It is a human waste.  It is a huge waste of our tax money that could go for America's many valid needs.  The entire system is corrupt and rotten.  The entire system needs to be remodeled.
