Remove Confederate Statues Honoring George Hermann from Houston

The Issue

There are currently two statues at two different public parks in Houston commemorating the confederate soldier George Hermann. We, the public, are calling for both to be removed.

While, George Hermann was not a slave owner, he was a confederate soldier who fought for a treacherous and racist cause. Both statues were created over 100 years after the confederacy had lost: the statue at Gragg park was created in 1943, followed more 40 years later by the statue in Hermann park, created in 1981. This means they were created with the knowledge and awareness that Hermann was a traitor and a racist.

Both statues should be removed: the current location glorifies this traitorous man, rather than informing the public on the racist history that he contributed to.

(We are also calling for the renaming of the Hermann Park.)

We are calling for the two statues to be removed and relocated in the wake of two other Confederate statues being removed from the Houston area and relocated into black historic museums so that they may be provided the correct context!

We, the citizens of Houston, demand that the two statues in Hermann and Gragg Park face the same fate: we demand they be removed and relocated to the same or a similar museum/environment that provides correct historical context on the racist history of this man - rather than glorifying him in public parks.
