The total length of the tram lines in Kolkata is 12 kilometers. The city currently has two operational tram routes: 

Route 5: Esplanade to Shyambazar

Route 25: Gariahat to Esplanade

The tram network in Kolkata has shrunk over the years due to a number of factors, including: 

Poor maintenance

Low ridership

Addition of road flyovers

Expansion of the Kolkata Metro

Perceptions that the trams are outdated and occupy too much road space

The state government has stopped investing in running trams since 2018. However, the government plans to continue the heritage tram line from Maidan to Esplanade.
