The Issue

My research on sustainable development of our city's heritage Calcutta tramways management with the importance of environmental significance value ...

Calcutta Tramways, a historic and eco-friendly public transportation system, is facing the threat of elimination from city roads, except for one route. Here's a summary of the situation:

Heritage and Environmental Significance:

Calcutta Tramways is a 140-year-old heritage transportation system, making it one of the oldest in Asia.

It's an eco-friendly, zero-emission mode of transport, producing no pollution or greenhouse gas emissions.

Threat of Elimination:

The State of West Bengal is planning to remove tramways from most city roads, citing modernization and infrastructure development as reasons.

Only one route is expected to be spared, likely due to its historical significance or tourist value.

Consequences:

Loss of a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation option.

Disruption to commuters who rely on tramways as an affordable and efficient mode of transport.

Erasure of a part of Calcutta's cultural heritage and history.

Possible Solutions:

Modernize and upgrade the tramway infrastructure to make it more efficient and compatible with modern transportation systems.

Integrate tramways with other public transportation modes to create a comprehensive and sustainable network.

Engage with citizens, commuters, and stakeholders to raise awareness and support for preserving Calcutta Tramways.

Let's hope that the State of West Bengal reconsiders its decision and finds a way to preserve this eco-friendly and historic transportation system for future generations!

Green technologist SM Ghosh has proposed a innovative solution to modernize and develop the tramway infrastructure using solar energy, which aligns with sustainable development goals. Here's a breakdown of his suggestion:

Solar Energy Integration:

1.Grid Connection: Utilize existing electric tram cables to connect to the grid and power trams with solar energy.

2. Solar-Charged Battery Operated System: Implement solar charging stations at tram depots to charge batteries, which would power trams.

Rooftop Solar Panels:

1. Tram Depot Rooftop Installation: Install solar panels on tram depot rooftops to generate renewable energy.

Benefits:

1. Sustainable Development_: Promote clean tech public transport with a 150-passenger capacity.

2. Reduced Carbon Footprint_: Minimize reliance on fossil fuels and lower emissions.

3. Energy Efficiency_: Optimize energy consumption with solar power.

Challenges:

1. State Government's Priorities:

If the government prioritizes real estate development over sustainable transportation, the plan may not materialize.

2. Depot Premises Sale:

Selling tram depot premises for real estate would hinder the installation of solar charging stations and rooftop panels.

To overcome these challenges, it's crucial to:

1. Raise Awareness_: Educate stakeholders about the benefits of sustainable transportation and solar energy integration.

2. Collaborate with Government:

Engage with the state government to prioritize sustainable development and transportation.

3. Community Support: General public support for preserving the tramway system and promoting eco-friendly transportation.

By working together, we can ensure the modernization and sustainable development of Calcutta's tramway system for future generations !
