The restoration of trams in Kolkata is a matter of contention, with the state government and tram users' associations at odds over the future of the city's iconic tram service:
State government
The West Bengal government has announced that it will abolish trams across the city, except for a joyride route from Esplanade to Race Course. However, the Calcutta High Court has mandated that the state restore tram services. The High Court formed an advisory committee to explore how to restore and maintain the tram services.
Tram users' associations
The Calcutta Tram Users' Association (CTUA) and other tram users' associations are demanding the complete restoration of the tram service. They say that the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) is sabotaging the tramway and deliberately destroying it to sell depot lands to real estate developers.
Heritage conservationists
Heritage conservationists and other organizations are also opposing the proposed curtailment of tram services. They say that trams are a significant part of Kolkata's cultural landscape.
Public-private partnership
The High Court has suggested that a public-private partnership (PPP) model can be used to restore and rejuvenate tramcar services in Kolkata.
