As of July 9, 2024, the Calcutta High Court has restrained the government from removing or selling tram cars in Kolkata while a petition is pending. The petition was filed by Sulogna Mukherjee and the non-profit organization People United for Better Living in Calcutta to retain trams as a mode of transportation. The court has also formed an advisory committee to suggest ways to preserve trams in Kolkata. The committee includes officials from the state Transport department, members of the Calcutta Tram Users Association, and others
