Kolkata, India was the first Asian city to have an electric tram service in 1902, and it's the only city in India that still has an operational tram system. The first horse-drawn tram in India ran in Kolkata on February 24, 1873, between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat, a distance of 3.9 kilometers. However, the service was discontinued later that year because citizens didn't like the new mode of transportation. In 1880, the Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) was established in London, and meter-gauge horse-drawn tram tracks were laid along the same route. The Viceroy Lord Rippon inaugurated the route on November 1, 1880. In 1882, a steam tramway line was also opened.
