Suspend Fuel Excise & Investigate Profiteering Amid US-Isreal War with Iran!

Suspend Fuel Excise & Investigate Profiteering Amid US-Isreal War with Iran!
The issue
Australians are being hammered at the pump. In just days, Petrol and diesel has shot past $2/L - up 15–30 cents in 48 hours according to FuelWatch trends. And why? The Israel-US conflict with Iran hasn’t even disrupted our existing fuel stocks yet. This is fuel that companies and retailers already had in the country weeks ago - they paid yesterday’s wholesale prices, but we’re paying tomorrow’s war panic prices today.
Here's the smoking gun: while petrol and diesel prices are rocketing, average LPG prices in metro areas are actually dropping (from around 140c/L to 139.4c/L over the past week. LPG - like oil - relies heavily on supplies passing through or near the Strait of Hormuz (from major Gulf exporters like Qatar). If the conflict was genuinely causing widespread supply panic and cost pressures right now, LPG should be rising too. Instead, it's falling. This glaring inconsistency shows these petrol/diesel hikes aren't just about war fears - they're about retailers and suppliers seizing the moment to inflate margins on stockpiled fuel Australians are already paying too much for.
This isn't just unfair - It’s opportunistic profiteering off a war thousands of kilometres away, while ordinary families are already battling cost-of-living pain. Rent, groceries, bills - now this? Enough is enough!
We - The Australian people demand real action, not more “monitoring” or empty condemnations from the government and ACCC - We demand the following:
1: Launch a full, transparent ACCC investigation immediately - Examine fuel purchase timelines, wholesale vs retail margins, and whether companies are using the conflict as an excuse to gouge Australians before actual supply costs rise.
2: Suspend or halve the fuel excise NOW - just like Scott Morrison’s government did in 2022 when petrol prices spiked (temporarily cutting the excise to give relief). The current excise is over 52 cents per litre = that’s billions flowing to the government while families struggle. If they could do it then, they can do it now. War should not be a reason for more tax revenue on essential fuel.
3: Hold retailers and suppliers accountable - No more profiting from fear and war. Australians deserve fair prices and real relief - not excuses.
Fuel isn't just petrol - it's the hidden tax on everything - It's the lifeblood of the 21st century economy. The trucks delivering your groceries run on diesel - higher fuel means 5–10%(or more) on your weekly shop. Your power bill rises because energy distribution and backups depend on fuel costs. Rent and mortgages climb as landlords pass on transport and maintenance hikes. Online deliveries, school runs, work commutes, doctor visits - all get more expensive. Gouge fuel, and the cost of living gets gouged across the board.
Lower fuel prices = lower everything we pay. This petition isn't about cars - it's about fighting for a fair go on every bill, every shop, and every basic need
We’re not asking for charity.
We’re demanding a fair go for ALL AUSTRALIANS!
The government has the power to act - they’ve done it before.
Sign this petition to tell Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Chris Bowen, the ACCC, and every fuel company: Stop gouging us. Suspend the excise. Investigate now. Give Australians the break we deserve.
STOP PLAYING AUSTRALIANS FOR FOOLS!
Data pulled from FuelWatch (WA) shows dramatic local spikes, but similar trends are occurring nationally — this is an Australia-wide issue.
