Support The Family Equity and Disability Support Act of 2025!

The Issue

As a family deeply affected by the outdated 1970s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) rules, we understand the challenges that over a million children currently face. These obsolete rules are trapping families in poverty, as they cut benefits if families earn more, pursue better jobs, or sell their homes. The rigid limit of $2,000-$3,000 on resources is creating a steep barrier to financial stability and prosperity.

Our family's experience reflects the struggle of many who rely on these benefits, and we know firsthand the desperate need for reform. To rectify this situation, we are proposing legislative change, the Family Equity and Disability Support Act of 2025, to cap deeming at $100,000 for children under the age of 18, protect home sales by allowing equity to be reinvested within 12 months, and eliminate large repayment costs.

Our children deserve a fighting chance at life, unhampered by financial pressures that stem from outdated policy. The reformation of SSI rules can provide a much-needed lifeline for families with disabled children and lay the foundation for a more inclusive and fair society. By signing this petition to pass the Family Equity and Disability Support Act of 2025, you can help us champion this crucial cause and push for the necessary reform in the SSI rules. Act now, sign this petition today, and help us create a better future for these children and their families.

Current SSI Policy Harms Families: The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program deems parental income and assets to children under 18, penalizing families who improve their circumstances. like our 11-year-old son, Levi, who is diagnosed with Down syndrome. We sold our home in September 2022 to relocate from a crime-ridden neighborhood. Using the equity to purchase a new home, our mortgage increased from $744 to $1,864 monthly at the time. Despite a combined parental net income of approximately $57,000 annually. SSA determined that Levi’s countable resources and deemed our parental income had exceeded SSI limits, resulting in a $25,855.46 overpayment from January 2021 to July 2023. Consequently, Levi’s SSI benefits, previously $914 monthly in 2023, were terminated, stripping my family of critical support previously used for housing costs. This forced reliance on relatives for groceries and clothing, cessation of credit card payments, and significant financial distress.

Children who are born with disabilities should not have to rely on the parents income to receive help. This allowed us to take him on trips and do things that he could enjoy and we could enjoy with him as a family. What really gets me is that my son will never leave our home, he will always be with us. But when he turns 18 our finances are not considered and he will receive SSI benefits. That regulation/requirement should not happen for any family.
