The Issue

✍️ Support Democracy in Eritrea – Back U.S. Senate Resolution 350

Eritrea has been under dictatorship for over 30 years. No elections. No constitution implemented. No free press. Thousands jailed without trial. Families torn apart. A generation trapped in indefinite national service.

Senator Richard Durbin has taken an important step by introducing Senate Resolution 350, a potential bipartisan resolution condemning human rights abuses in Eritrea and standing in solidarity with the Eritrean people’s fight for freedom. The co sponsors of this Resolution includes Senator Chris Coons, and Senator Adam Schiff.

This resolution calls on the Eritrean government to:

  1. Release political prisoners and detainees held without due process and release of religious leaders. We ask the release of the recently imprisoned Sheikh Adam Shaban to be added in the Senate Resolution 350.
  2. Implement its own 1997 constitution that guarantees rights and freedoms.
  3. Allow democratic elections and end one-party rule and to open the political system to multiple parties.
  4. Open the country to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights.

Why this matters to all of us:

  1. Eritrean Americans: Our families back home deserve freedom and dignity.
  2. Ethiopian Americans: A democratic Eritrea means a stable and prosperous Horn of Africa, trade relation via port, respect of sovereignty, and lasting peace in the region. Isais Afwerki and PFDJ enablers are responsible for the destabilization in the region.
  3. All Americans: This struggle is part of our broader legacy of standing against injustice — This resolution improves Americas national security and trade relations in the region as well.
  4.  All allies of freedom: Human rights are universal. Silence only strengthens dictatorships in can onlead lead to more injustice.

By signing this petition, you are telling the U.S. Senate and the world: We demand freedom and democracy for the Eritrean people.
