Support Our Nurses: Safe Staffing, Stronger Minds
Support Our Nurses: Safe Staffing, Stronger Minds
The Issue
This petition was born out of personal experiences; volunteering at two different hospitals, it's become impossible for me to ignore the distress I constantly see nurses going through. One nurse, whom I had the privilege to help, explained to me that the primary cause of prevalent nursing burnout is the nursing shortage. This crisis not only affects the nurses I interact with on a regular basis, but also extends to my own family, some of whom are deeply mired in the nursing profession and face daily the stress that comes with it.
It is evident that our nurses are struggling and they need our help. The nursing shortage, which has been a persistent problem, is one that demands immediate attention. Data reports show that by 2022, there will be far more registered nurse jobs available than any other profession, with the potential for a shortage of about 1.2 million vacancies (U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics).
To address this, three essential steps need to be taken. Firstly, we must push for the expansion of nursing programs in our universities and colleges. Secondly, we need to ensure that there is equitable access to clinical placements for nursing students. Lastly, and equally important, we should look into offering incentives for experienced nurses to serve as clinical preceptors to help guide our future nurses.
Not only would these actions help alleviate the pressure on our current nurses and significantly decrease the rates of burnout, but it would also ensure continuity and quality of patient care. Change can only happen when we stand up for those who dedicate their lives to caring for us. We call upon relevant decision-makers and policy creators to take immediate steps addressing the nursing shortage. Please sign this petition to support our nurses and improve patient care.
