Support Fair Compensation and benefits for early childhood educators in Ontario
The Issue
Early childhood educators in Ontario play an essential role in shaping the minds and futures of our youngest generation. They provide safe, nurturing, and educational environments that lay the foundation for lifelong learning. However, despite their critical contributions, many educators face significant challenges due to the lack of fair compensation, comprehensive benefits, and supportive working conditions. This lack of support not only affects educators but also impacts the quality of care and education that children receive.
Currently, many early childhood educators work in conditions where compensation does not reflect their professional responsibilities, and benefits are limited or unavailable. Only a small proportion of educators have access to health benefits or pension plans, and many experience job insecurity, heavy workloads, and limited opportunities for professional growth. Compared to educators in the K–12 system, including Designated Early Childhood Educators (DECEs) working alongside teachers, early childhood educators in child care settings often do not receive equitable pay, benefits, or professional recognition.
The implications of these challenges extend beyond educators themselves. Low compensation and lack of benefits contribute to high turnover, staff shortages, and burnout, leading to inconsistent care and disrupted learning experiences for children. If we are committed to providing high-quality early childhood education, it is essential to ensure that all early childhood educators are fairly compensated and supported.
We urge policymakers to take immediate action to ensure that all early childhood educators across Ontario, regardless of their workplace setting, have access to fair compensation and comprehensive benefits, including:
1. Fair Compensation
Establish a standardized wage grid that reflects education, experience, and professional responsibilities
Ensure compensation is comparable to educators in the public education system, including DECEs
2. Comprehensive Health and Wellness Benefits
Extended health insurance covering dental care, vision care, massage therapy, and other supplementary health services
Prescription drug coverage
3. Retirement and Pension Plans
Access to long-term pension systems similar to those available to teachers
4. Paid Leave Entitlements
Paid sick leave
Paid vacation time
Paid personal leave days
5. Fair Workload and Working Conditions
Paid planning and documentation time
Paid lunch time
By ensuring fair compensation, comprehensive benefits, and equitable working conditions for all early childhood educators, we invest not only in the well-being of educators but also in the quality of early learning for children and the strength of our communities.
We call on the Ontario government to improve the distribution of childcare funding to ensure fair compensation, comprehensive benefits, and professional recognition for all RECEs.
Stand with us to support meaningful change. Sign this petition to advocate for fair compensation, benefits, and recognition for early childhood educators in Ontario.
