Support Canadians in the Netherlands amend reciprocal driving licence agreements
The Issue
Join the support for Canadians seeking to amend the agreements for driver's licence exchange in the Netherlands!
Canadians living in the Netherlands currently experience an inequity of the Reciprocal Agreement for the driver’s licence exchange policy between Canada and the Netherlands.
We will be asking the Canadian Federal and Provincial governments to review and update this reciprocal agreement to ensure all Canadians can exchange their Canadian driver's licence for a Dutch driving licence, once they become residents of the Netherlands.
Here are the key points to highlight:
1. Currently, citizens of the Netherlands can move to Canada and simply exchange a Dutch driver's licence for a Canadian licence in some provinces*.
2. This driver’s licence exchange policy is not fully “reciprocated” for Canadians moving to the Netherlands. Only citizens of Quebec and Alberta can exchange their Canadian licence for a Dutch licence. There is one exception to this item. Reciprocal exchange only applies to Canadians who qualify for the Dutch “30% ruling**”, not all Canadian citizens.
3. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, Canadians from all provinces are allowed to drive for a period of 6 months. Within this period, only residents with the 30% ruling** or residents of Quebec and Alberta can exchange licenses for a Dutch one. The rest cannot, even though they may have driven during this initial period.
4. Canadians who do not qualify for the 30% ruling** and are not from Quebec or Alberta must go through an extensive and expensive process to take a theory exam, driving lessons and a practical exam. The cost for this is approximately 3,000 euros ($4,500 CAN) and can take up to 8-12 months to complete the process.
