Support bill 60 for a fairer housing market in Ontario

The Issue

We urge the Ontario government to proceed with Bill 60 without delay. This legislation is crucial for restoring balance and accountability in the rental market, contributing to a healthier housing environment in Ontario.

Restoring Contract Balance:
After the first-year lease expires, tenancies automatically convert to month-to-month, granting tenants near-perpetual tenure while landlords are indefinitely bound. Bill 60 rectifies this by providing both parties with equal rights and necessary flexibility.

Preventing System Abuse:
Currently, some tenants exploit legal loopholes, such as filing false repair claims to delay eviction while living rent-free, frustrating landlords and hindering rental investments. Bill 60 aims to close such loopholes, fostering greater accountability and fairness across the board.

Unlocking Vacant Units:
Fear of being stuck in problematic tenancies has left many units vacant. With Bill 60, landlords can confidently rent properties, significantly increasing housing availability and mitigating the housing crisis.

Encouraging Rental Market Participation:
Allowing landlords the capability to renew or not renew leases equitably provides them with flexibility parallel to that enjoyed by tenants, thereby stimulating greater participation in the rental market.

Supporting Responsible Property Ownership:
Landlords currently face heavy restrictions when they need to reclaim their properties, be it for renovations or sales. Bill 60 reinstates these essential rights while maintaining protective measures for tenants against abuse.

Reducing LTB Backlogs:
The overwhelmed Landlord and Tenant Board deals with many repetitive cases from serial offenders. By streamlining processes through Bill 60, genuine cases can be addressed more swiftly, benefiting landlords and tenants alike.

Protecting Good Tenants:
Good tenants will not suffer from Bill 60; rather, it aims to ensure a fair, stable, and transparent housing market. Responsible landlords will continue to value and retain exemplary tenants.

Returning to a Fair, Proven System:
Historically, both tenants and landlords could end month-to-month tenancies with minimal notice, fostering flexibility and discouraging exploitation. Bill 60 seeks a return to this fair system.

Boosting Investor Confidence:
Numerous condo units remain vacant across Ontario, particularly in Toronto, due to owner apprehension under current regulations. By restoring assurance through Bill 60, these units can be offered as rentals, actively addressing housing shortages.

We strongly believe Bill 60 is a step in the right direction and ask for your support. Sign this petition to help create a balanced and fair rental system for everyone in Ontario.
