Firearms and drug use don’t mix—and protecting public safety sometimes means drawing clear lines.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford is standing with 18 other states in urging the Supreme Court to uphold a federal rule that bars people who use illegal drugs—including marijuana under federal law—from possessing firearms.

This isn’t about punishing cannabis users. It’s about setting a standard: if someone is actively using a controlled substance, they should not also be able to legally own a deadly weapon. That’s a basic, commonsense protection supported by decades of legal precedent.

Marijuana may be legal under state law, but under federal law it remains a Schedule I drug. And until that changes, the courts—and public officials—have a responsibility to apply the law consistently.

This rule doesn’t say you can’t use marijuana. It simply says that while you’re using it, you can’t possess a firearm. Similar restrictions exist for alcohol or prescription drugs—where temporary impairment can create risk.

We support Attorney General Ford’s commitment to public safety and his refusal to treat gun rights as absolute when substance use is involved.
