The Issue

At the age of 12, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, a life-altering and potentially life-threatening condition. Managing this disease is a daily battle, filled with both good and bad days. Living in a low-income single-parent household, I endure the financial strain as we struggle to afford insulin, which costs more than our monthly rent. This reality has led me to ration insulin, and tragically, I have been hospitalized twice due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication that arises from insufficient insulin. Over 1.6 million Americans, including college students and individuals with low incomes, experience similar hardships as they are forced to ration insulin because of its prohibitively high cost. It's a worldwide issue, where people are burdened with choosing between financial solvency and their health, an unfair predicament given that the production cost of insulin ranges between $2 to $6. The disparity between the cost of essential medication like insulin and the accessibility of resources like Narcan, which is available for free or at a lower cost, highlights a significant injustice. Type 1 Diabetes is not a lifestyle choice; it is an unavoidable health challenge that millions face globally. Yet, people with diabetes bear the immense financial burden to simply survive, while other medications are prioritized. It's time to push for a change. We urge the government and pharmaceutical companies to make insulin affordable and invest in aggressive research to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. This will not only save lives but also alleviate the economic pressure on millions of families who struggle daily. The cost of insulin should not dictate our quality of life or our ability to live. Join me in signing this petition. Together, we can amplify our voices and bring about necessary reforms that can ease the burden for countless families and individuals with Type 1 Diabetes. Let's advocate for the affordability of insulin and support meaningful research towards a cure.
