Support Adding Traffic Cameras to School Buses to ID Reckless Drivers
The Issue
Hi, I'll keep this short. Last night I saw a student that barely escaped being run down by a driver that ignored a stopped school bus (lights flashing, stop signs out) on Lancaster Ave in Haverford. In reporting this to police and district transportation, I learned: Lower Merion Township lacks traffic cameras that record at most of their intersections. And Lower Merion School District does not have traffic facing cameras on their buses. Instead, it's up to the bus driver to "describe the driver, the car's make and model, and get the license plate". I couldn't even do that and it happened in front of me.
It appears at least 32 school districts across Pennsylvania employ this technology, ID'ing literally thousands of violators and fining them $300 apiece. Revenue is used to pay for the technology, with some going to the schools and the police department. This is a win-win-win-win, with the biggest winner being our kids. Pennsylvania is one of just 22 states that passed a law in 2020 making the enforcement of camera-ID school bus crossing violators legal. Lower Merion School District should have been at the forefront. Help us get them there, and make these violators think twice before blowing by a stopped school bus that's letting off our kids.
Thanks!
