THE ISSUE: Algin Sutton Recreation Center is a vital hub for South LA residents. However, our senior population currently lacks a dedicated, level, and safe walking surface. Walking on uneven sidewalks or shared athletic fields increases the risk of falls and collisions with high-impact sports activities.

THE PROPOSAL: We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners allocate funding and resources to install a dedicated, rubberized walking track at Algin Sutton Recreation Center.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

The Algin Sutton Recreation Center in South Los Angeles is a beloved community hub, providing vital recreational opportunities for countless residents. However, despite its wide array of amenities, there remains a significant gap in its offerings—a dedicated walking track. Walking is one of the most popular and accessible forms of exercise, promoting cardiovascular health, reducing stress, and improving overall well-being. For families, seniors, and fitness enthusiasts alike, a safe and dedicated space to walk can enhance community health, foster connections, and ultimately improve the quality of life for residents of all ages.

South Los Angeles faces unique health challenges. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, this region has higher rates of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes compared to other areas in the county. One of the barriers to improving these statistics is the lack of accessible, safe, and convenient locations for regular physical activity. A dedicated walking track at the Algin Sutton Recreation Center could serve as a proactive step towards addressing these issues.

By investing in this project, the city can demonstrate its commitment to community health, equity, and well-being. A walking track would not only benefit the physical health of its users but also create a welcoming space for social interaction, contributing to stronger community ties. It provides a free and low-impact exercise option, making it inclusive and accessible to individuals regardless of age or fitness level.

We ask the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks to prioritize the construction of a dedicated walking track at the Algin Sutton Recreation Center. This initiative aligns with larger public health goals and is a wise investment in the community's future. Let your voice be heard and support this effort to promote a healthier, more active, and connected South Los Angeles.
