Millions of South Africans are unemployed and receive no government assistance whatsoever. No just society should allow its residents to starve.

South Africa needs a basic income grant to alleviate inhumane hunger and poverty. A small basic grant to support millions of unemployed people could be funded from:

- using savings by stopping corruption and irregular and wasteful expenditure;

or

- getting each of the more than 700 State-owned enterprises to cut on average R48 million from their incomes and bailouts.

The long term solution to reducing unemployment is to create an investment-friendly environment for businesses, but in the meantime, unemployed people are starving to death.

We ask all South Africans to stand together as one nation and start looking after one another.
