Support 50 words in Djukun children's book launch
The issue
On 23 December 2025, the children’s book "50 Words in Djukun" is scheduled for launch—a celebration of language, culture, and community. This event is an opportunity to honour the Djukun language and share it with future generations. However, the Shire of Broome has reneged by refusing to host this launch at the Broome Public Library. This decision appears to have been made based on emotion and without proper consultation with the community.
Public libraries should be spaces for everyone, fostering learning, cultural exchange, and community connection. The Broome Public Library is a cornerstone of our community, yet an unjustified denial to host an event that promotes and preserves indigenous language contradicts its very purpose.
The "50 Words in Djukun" book launch is more than just an event; it is a vital part of a larger movement to preserve and revitalise the Djukun language. Indigenous languages around the world are disappearing at an alarming rate. According to UNESCO, an indigenous language becomes extinct every two weeks. The preservation and celebration of these languages are essential for maintaining cultural diversity and heritage.
By hosting the book launch at the Broome Public Library, we can demonstrate our community’s commitment to cultural preservation. This would also provide a platform to educate the broader community about the richness and significance of the Djukun language, fostering a sense of pride among children and adults alike.
We urge the Shire of Broome to reconsider their decision. By providing space for this book launch, they will not only rectify a misguided decision but also endorse an important cause—supporting a cultural asset that belongs to all of us.
