Blinds for E5- Geelong Lutheran College

The issue

Since E5 was built in 2010, it has never had blinds. Blinds are necessity for E5 as they can improve students education, keep them safe, and protect their health.

Continuous squinting and staring can affect the functioning of students eyes, possibly leading to the need for glasses. Glasses can negatively affect students future lives by making them less employable and causing them to spend extensive money on glasses. Students who are timetabled in E5 continuously leaning in an odd position so that they can see their computer screen through the glare of the sun can also negatively affect students posture.

Due to the lack of blinds in E5, valuable and expensive resources are being unnecessarily used to cover the windows, only leading to a waste of materials and damage to windows.

Blinds are also ESSENTIAL for keeping students and staff safe. During an emergency where an armed attacker enters the school campus, an emergency lockdown will be called. In a lockdown, it is required that doors are locked, lights are turned off, and blinds are closed; but how can the occupying class of E5 close non-existent blinds in an emergency? Answer: they can't. Having no blinds leaves staff and students vulnerable to being spotted by an armed attacker, presenting them as an easy target, Posing a threat to their safety.

Previously many requests for blinds in E5 have been made, only to be told that 'the sun doesn't shine in the classroom.' This may be true, but the glare from parked car's windscreens reflects into the classroom, intensifying the sunlight's glare. To whomever doesn't believe intense sunlight comes through the E5 windows and that blinds are unnecessary, please rethink your decision as blinds are not about the sun, but safety.

Please, sign this petition to get blinds for E5, protecting the health and welfare of students and staff at GLC.
