The Issue

I have cherished being part of a school that encourages inclusivity, community service, and personal growth. The role of valedictorian, traditionally seen as a reflection of these values, should not focus solely on grade point average (GPA). This year, I've been able to achieve a GPA of 91%, but currently the criteria to run for valedictorian requires a GPA of 95% or more.

By maintaining a focus on grades, the school overlooks the wider contributions and values that students bring to the community. These contributions:

-Founding and leading the initiative to implement free period products in the bathrooms
-Student Council VP
-Participant in the Bishops University research committee for incoming student teachers
-Organizing garbage cleanups after school (separate from the annual Earth Day one) X3
-Rugby team member
-Yearbook committee member
-Mini-U X2 & participating in most after school activities/extracurriculars

...are what define the student body and the spirit of our school.

I believe that every student who deeply embodies the values of DMHS, regardless of their exact GPA, should have the opportunity to run for valedictorian. This is about setting a precedent that recognizes and celebrates the full range of student contributions.

I urge the school administration to re-evaluate their criteria for selecting valedictorian candidates to accommodate students who, even if slightly below the GPA requirement, exemplify leadership, dedication, and community involvement. By doing so, we acknowledge our students and uphold the values DMHS stands for.

With your support I would personally run for this position and represent our graduating class as more than a number.

Support this petition to bring about a more all encompassing approach to student recognition at DMHS. Sign and help us redefine what it truly means to be a valedictorian.
