Strip Chauncey Billups of His Hall of Fame Status and NBA Titles if Found Guilty

The Issue

Chauncey Billups was once celebrated as an NBA champion, a Finals MVP, and a role model.

But now, he faces serious allegations at the center of a nationwide federal gambling and corruption probe — including suspected insider involvement in betting on games he coached.

If these allegations are confirmed, Billups should not continue to be honored by the sport he’s accused of defrauding.

Federal indictments describe “Co-Conspirator 8” — an Oregon resident, former NBA player, and current coach — as giving gamblers inside information about a Trail Blazers game he coached in 2023. While Billups’ lawyer has denied his involvement, the facts presented align with his career timeline. This is not a minor infraction. It’s a potential breach of the game’s core integrity.

Gambling in the NBA is not new — but when it reaches the head coaching level and allegedly involves organized crime, it becomes a crisis. Fans, players, and the public need to know that no one is above the rules — not even a Hall of Famer.

We, the undersigned, call on:

  • The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to immediately review Billups’ status and begin proceedings to revoke his induction if he is found guilty of game-fixing or insider betting.
  • The NBA to suspend all honors and review all awards or titles tied to any season affected by game manipulation or illegal activity.
  • The league and its partners to commit to restoring trust in the game by acting transparently and decisively in all gambling-related investigations.

This petition is not about punishment for its own sake. It’s about protecting the future of professional basketball. If the league sends a message that even top-tier coaches can gamble on games and keep their legacies intact, then the NBA’s rules — and its history — become meaningless.

The Hall of Fame should represent the highest standards of integrity, not scandal.

If Billups is found guilty, his name should be removed — permanently.
