WE NEED YOUR HELP… PLEASE READ…

Last year the Land and Environmental Court approved an application for We Kando Pty Ltd to build holding ponds for untreated and treated sewage, rig mud and oily water. These ponds have now been built and are located approximately 20km north of Roma on the Carnarvon Highway. The ponds are clearly visible from the main Highway into Roma and are an absolute eyesore already. They are already reflecting negatively on this area and Roma as a town. 

We Kando now has an application in with Maranoa Regional Council to change the existing approval by adding a waste transfer station and composting pads. The proposed waste transfer facility would provide for construction and demolition waste (bricks, concrete, steel etc) and green waste to be dumped on this site. It also means that the muck from the ponds will be pumped from the ponds onto green waste to make compost. The problem is, this site is built on prime agricultural and cattle grazing land and most importantly right beside the Bungil Creek. 

If the current pond was to overflow the untreated contents of the pond would flow directly into the Bungil Creek. Not only that, if the composting pads are to go ahead, the sludge from ponds would be pumped directly onto green waste meaning that if it rained, this sludge would run from these pads into the Bungil creek which will then flow straight through Roma and so on. If the proposal was to be approved it would significantly and permanently affect the rural land it is situated on, the Bungil Creek, Roma and all downstream areas. 

While we can’t stop what is currently built on this site we hope to stop any further construction from taking place. We are genuinely concerned about the affects this will have on the health of everyone in the area as well as downstream. We are concerned that if this application is approved, further applications will also be approved which will result in further dumping being allowed.
