Every day, millions of New Yorkers go about their lives unaware that their movements may be recorded, stored, and searched by automated license plate reader systems.

A trip to work. A visit to a doctor. A stop at a place of worship. A political meeting. A family visit.

These are ordinary activities — but when networks of surveillance cameras collect location data over time, they can create a detailed record of where people go and when they go there.

New Yorkers deserve safety. But we also deserve privacy, transparency, and limits on government surveillance.

We are calling on the New York State Legislature to pass strong statewide protections for automated license plate reader (ALPR) systems, including Flock Safety cameras and similar technologies.

These systems are increasingly being deployed throughout our communities and can collect information on millions of drivers — including people who have done nothing wrong.

We are asking lawmakers to ensure that:

✅ Residents' travel data is not stored indefinitely.
✅ Access to historical location information requires proper oversight.
✅ Communities have a voice before surveillance systems are installed.
✅ Law enforcement use is transparent and accountable.
✅ Misuse of collected data has real consequences.

Public safety and privacy are not opposites. New York can protect communities without creating a system where everyone's movements are quietly recorded.
