Stop unisex toilets in high schools

The Issue

In Amble, our high school has recently introduced unisex toilets, and this decision is causing a wave of concern among parents, including myself. Imagine being a 13-year-old girl, walking into a restroom only to find yourself sharing it with boys your own age or older. Our children, especially during the tender and formative years of puberty, need a safe space to navigate their individual challenges, not added stress.

Children, particularly girls, are undeniably vulnerable during this life stage. They face the realities of their changing bodies, the onset of menstruation, and a plethora of related issues. Being forced to share such intimate spaces with boys compromises their comfort and privacy. In fact, many girls are choosing to avoid using these facilities altogether, enduring discomfort and risking their health by developing urinary tract infections (UTIs) as a result.

Statistics show that privacy in restrooms aids in reducing anxiety amongst students. Furthermore, a separate study reveals that a significant percentage of teenage girls feel embarrassed or self-conscious during their period, and the mere thought of having to manage it in front of boys can exacerbate their discomfort. Such unavoidable stressors impact their concentration on studies and overall school experience, leading to a host of mental and physical issues.

Moreover, the idea of unisex toilets undermines the very principles of security and privacy that separate facilities are meant to provide. There is a reason why restrooms have traditionally been segregated, especially in educational settings, and the current system's structure has stood the test of time for good reason—we must preserve it.

We can create a solution that respects both the privacy and inclusivity of all students by maintaining separate facilities while also providing additional, specific unisex options for those who choose to use them. This balanced approach ensures everyone’s comfort and safety.

Together, let's demand that school boards reconsider their decisions and recognize the profound impact this has on our children’s well-being. Sign this petition to urge Amble High School to abolish unisex toilets and uphold a trusted system that respects our children’s privacy and dignity.
