Stop unfair redundancies for long-term employees

Stop unfair redundancies for long-term employees
The Issue
I had been working for a company for three and a half years, dedicated and hopeful of a mutually beneficial career. However, amidst the aspects of the company showing financial distress, I proposed a solution that could have saved costs and helped many employees, including parents struggling with rising childcare costs. I suggested that perhaps allowing employees to work from home could save on office lease fees and offer the flexibility needed for a modern workforce. Unfortunately, my suggestions were left unheeded.
Instead of considering adaptive measures such as hybrid working, the company decided to proceed with redundancies. Initially, they claimed there would be only one stage, but in reality, there were three rounds, affecting many loyal employees, including myself.
This situation isn't unique to just my experience. In various regions, especially across the UK, companies have been resorting to redundant layoffs as a quick fix without genuinely considering long-term, sustainable solutions. Employees who have devoted years, and have been a part of the company's growth, are stripped off their jobs suddenly and unfairly.
We need legislation to protect employees—especially those who have worked for companies for over two years—from such unjust layoff practices. Companies should be compelled to explore all possible alternatives and involve employees in decision-making processes regarding cost-saving measures and operational changes before considering redundancies.
By implementing policies that prioritise employee well-being and financial stability, companies can instead foster a more committed and innovative workforce. We urge the government to intervene and introduce regulations that prevent companies from dismissing long-term employees arbitrarily, ensuring that redundancies remain the last resort.
Let's stand together to safeguard our jobs and demand better practices from our employers. Sign this petition to encourage our policymakers to act against unfair redundancies and to strengthen employment protection for dedicated workers across the UK.
