STOP UK Lawyers for Israel
The Issue
Petition:
We, the undersigned, call for scrutiny and action against the UKLFI advocates for the widespread adoption and application of the IHRA definition.
Background:
UKLFI states its mission is to "support Israel and ensure that the rights of Israel and Israelis are respected." While combating antisemitism is a vital goal, we believe that UKLFI's methods often cross the line into suppressing legitimate criticism of Israeli policies and actions.
Concerns:
Suppression of Freedom of Expression
UKLFI has been accused of attempting to silence pro-Palestinian voices on university campuses and within other organisations.
We believe that open and critical debate about Israeli-Palestinian issues is essential and that UKLFI's actions undermine this.
Misapplication of Antisemitism Definitions
This conflation stifles legitimate debate and undermines the fight against genuine antisemitism.
They often argue that certain forms of anti-Zionism (opposition to the existence of a Jewish state) cross the line into antisemitism.
Critics allege that UKLFI sometimes uses accusations of antisemitism to silence those who criticise Israel's actions towards Palestinians.
This creates a "chilling effect" on free speech, particularly in academic and public discourse.
One example of the issues that arise, is the way that complaints are made to the charity commission, regarding organisations that are critical of Israel.
This can cause those organisations to have to spend time and resources, defending themselves from accusations.
We urge:
Increased public awareness of UKLFI's activities and their potential impact on freedom of expression.
A critical examination of the use of legal tactics to suppress pro-Palestinian advocacy.
A clear distinction between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism.
We believe that holding Israel accountable for its actions is not antisemitic and that the right to advocate for Palestinian rights must be protected.
Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support for freedom of expression and the right to advocate for Palestinian rights.
They must be investigated via the following:
The Charities Commission
Regulates registered UK charities
SRA
Regulates solicitors and law firms, sets standards, and oversees rules and disciplinary arrangements. The SRA's purpose is to protect the public by ensuring that solicitors meet high standards.
Bar Standards Board (BSB)
Regulates barristers, performing the same functions as the SRA for solicitors.
Legal Ombudsman (LeO)
Handles complaints from the public about solicitors, barristers, and registered European lawyers.
Legal Services Board (LSB)
Oversees independent regulators, including the SRA and BSB, and promotes a diverse legal services sector.
The GMC
The General Medical Council have taken complaints made by UKLFI which has triggered suspensions and investigations. The GMC must be encouraged to review complaints raised by UKLFI very carefully before pursuing them. Obviously all cases of actual anti-semitism should be tackled properly.
