Stop Trump's unjustified federal takeover of D.C.

Stop Trump's unjustified federal takeover of D.C.
The Issue
President Trump just declared a "public safety emergency" in Washington D.C.—despite violent crime being at a 30-year low and down another 26% this year. Using a rarely-invoked clause of the D.C. Home Rule Act, Trump has placed the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control, deployed 800 National Guard troops, and threatened to extend his takeover indefinitely.
This isn't about public safety. It's about power.
The District of Columbia has long struggled for the right to govern itself. Local officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb, have rightly called the move “unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful.” As Schwalb pointed out, “There is no crime emergency in the District of Columbia.”
Even as Trump claims to be “getting rid of the slums,” he offers no plans to address the root causes of crime or homelessness, nor to invest in local systems that actually reduce harm. Instead, he’s concentrating power in the hands of a few appointees—including Attorney General Pam Bondi and others with no local ties—while dismissing the role of elected D.C. leadership.
D.C. residents deserve the same democratic rights as every other American. They should not be subjected to political theater disguised as public policy.
We, the undersigned, demand the immediate end to the federal takeover of D.C.’s police force. Congress must act to safeguard D.C.’s autonomy and restore local control—before this dangerous precedent becomes permanent.
