Stop the Waste: Ban or Limit Excessive Corflute Use in Political Campaigns

The issue

Every election season, our streets, fences, and public spaces are flooded with thousands of plastic corflute signs promoting political candidates. While intended to raise awareness, these signs often do more harm than good — contributing to plastic pollution, visual clutter, and unnecessary waste that ends up in landfill or littering our environment long after the election is over.

Corflute — a non-biodegradable plastic — is used in staggering volumes across Australia, particularly during local, state, and federal election campaigns. Many of these signs are used once, then discarded, despite claims of recycling or reuse. The reality is that the majority are not recycled, and few councils have the resources to manage the cleanup.

We believe it's time for meaningful change.

We call on the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), State and Territory Electoral Commissions, and local councils to:

  • Ban or significantly limit the use of corflute and other single-use plastic materials in election campaigning.
  • Require candidates to use more sustainable, digital, or re-usable alternatives.
  • Introduce stronger enforcement measures for the timely removal and responsible disposal of all campaign signage.

This is not an attack on free speech or democracy — it is a call for responsible and sustainable political practice.

Let’s protect our communities and environment from unnecessary plastic waste. Sign this petition to demand cleaner elections and a smarter, more sustainable future.
