In our communities throughout the U.S , we the people have always valued our privacy and freedom. As technology advances, our personal freedoms are increasingly under threat, particularly with the widespread use of flock cameras and those similar. These surveillance tools, often installed without clear consent or discussion, have become a concern for many residents. They essentially track every vehicle's movement, collecting data on where people go, when, and how often. Flock Safety, the company behind these cameras, argues that they are only for public safety. However, there is little transparency about who accesses this data, how it is used, and what measures are in place to protect it from misuse. We have a fundamental right to privacy, a right that is guaranteed by the Constitution and a right that should not be compromised without our explicit consent. Moreover, numerous studies have questioned the effectiveness of mass surveillance in crime prevention. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, surveillance technologies, like flock cameras and other name brands, rarely deter crime and often infringe on people’s civil rights, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. We must stand together and demand accountability. We urge states and local governments to halt the proliferation of flock cameras and those like it in the U.S until there is a transparent, public debate about their necessity and a clear framework established for their use. This framework should include strict guidelines about data collection, retention, access, and usage, ensuring privacy rights are respected. Please join me in standing up for our rights.
