Stop the use of dangerous loose chipping on our roads

The Issue

We call on Wicklow County Council to immediately cease the use of dangerous chippings in road dressing. These loose chippings, often applied as a cheap and quick method of road resurfacing, pose serious risks to all road users, especially cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. The sharp, loose stones can cause skidding, loss of control, and severe injuries in the event of an accident.

Thousands of hikers, cyclists, and motorcyclists use the roads in Wicklow, providing an excellent boost to our local businesses. These users are vulnerable to injury from loose stones launched from the wheels of passing vehicles. Motorcycles, in particular, are prone to losing control of the front wheel under braking due to low traction on the loose gravel, potentially risking a further increase in motorcyclist deaths on Wicklow roads.

The scattered debris from these chippings is known to damage vehicles, create hazardous driving conditions, and result in increased maintenance costs for both motorists and local authorities—an ironic outcome from a cost-saving measure.

We urge the County Council to prioritize the safety of all road users by adopting safer and more sustainable alternatives for road dressing. By stopping the use of dangerous chippings, we can reduce accidents, protect our communities, and ensure safer journeys for everyone on Ireland’s roads.
