Stop the UPA-A, USAPA, and the PPA from Raising Pickleball Paddle Certification Fees!

The Issue

To: United Pickleball Association of America (UPA-A), US Pickleball Association (USAPA),  Professional Pickleball Association (PPA)

We, the undersigned players, coaches, manufacturers, and enthusiasts of the pickleball community, are writing to express our strong opposition to the recent proposed increase in paddle certification fees. This decision negatively impacts the fair market competition, innovation incentives, inclusivity, affordability, and growth of the sport that so many of us hold dear.

**Our Concerns:**

1. **Financial Burden on Manufacturers:** The increased fees for paddle certification place a disproportionate financial burden on manufacturers, especially smaller, independent brands. This could result in fewer affordable paddle options for players, ultimately limiting the accessibility of pickleball equipment.

2. **Increased Costs Passed to Players:** The inevitable increase in production costs will likely be passed on to consumers. As a result, players—particularly those from lower-income backgrounds—will face higher prices for paddles, making the sport less accessible to many.

3. **Barrier to Innovation:** By raising the certification prices, the USAPA and PPA may stifle innovation within the industry. Start-up companies and independent manufacturers could be discouraged from developing new paddles, fearing the high cost of certification. Innovation is critical to advancing the sport, and these increased fees threaten the variety of paddle options available to players.

4. **Contradiction to the Spirit of Pickleball:** Pickleball has thrived as a sport due to its affordability, inclusiveness, and welcoming community. The fee hike contradicts these principles by creating barriers for both manufacturers and players. We believe that pickleball should remain a sport for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic background.

**Our Request:**

We respectfully urge the USAPA and PPA to reconsider this price hike and work with manufacturers, players, and other stakeholders to find a more equitable solution. We believe that fostering growth and innovation in the sport should not come at the expense of affordability and accessibility.

We propose the following actions:

1. **Immediate Suspension of the Price Hike:** Halt the implementation of the increased certification fees while engaging in meaningful discussions with manufacturers and players to explore alternative solutions.

2. **Tiered Pricing System:** Consider implementing a tiered pricing system for paddle certification based on the size and revenue of manufacturers, ensuring smaller companies are not disproportionately affected.

3. **Transparency in Decision-Making:** Provide more transparency regarding the reasons for the price increase and how the additional funds will benefit the pickleball community at large.

By signing this petition, we express our collective concern over the rising costs of paddle certification and its potential negative impact on the sport. We call on the UPA-A, USAPA and PPA to prioritize affordability, inclusiveness, and innovation in pickleball.

Together, we can preserve the integrity of this sport and ensure it continues to grow and thrive for players of all backgrounds.
