Stop the Supermarket Exit Road onto Nolan Road

Stop the Supermarket Exit Road onto Nolan Road
The issue
We, the residents and concerned community members, respectfully, strongly oppose the proposed consent at 404-444 Great South Road, Greenlane, Auckland, to build a new exit road from their site onto Nolan Road, a quiet residential street.
Nolan Road already suffers from serious congestion due to commuter parking for the nearby train station. Cars line both sides of the street, forcing vehicles to pull over to allow oncoming traffic to pass. This creates daily safety and accessibility concerns for residents, children, and pedestrians.
Nolan Road– showing existing parking/traffic situation
We want to be clear: as a community, we welcome the addition of a supermarket to the area. However, its impact must be managed in a way that is appropriate, reasonable, and fair to those who live here. The current proposal to direct commercial traffic onto Nolan Road does not meet that standard in our opinion.
The introduction of a supermarket exits or entry onto Nolan Road in our opinion would:
- Add significant new traffic volumes to a narrow residential road & causing significant traffic flows occurring outside of 8 am to 6 pm
- Threaten pedestrian and cyclist safety, particularly for families and children
- Erode the peaceful residential character of Nolan Road
- Transform a neighbourhood street into a commercial through-route
- Potentially have regular truck movements occurring
There is also an important precedent. We believe a previous attempt to create an exit road from the same property onto Nolan Road was rejected, and a buffer zone was established to protect the street. This buffer was implemented for good reason—and those protections should be respected and upheld.
Buffer Zone on Nolan Road
We also note that a portion of the land potentially being used by the supermarket appears to be zoned as THAB (Terrace Housing and Apartment Buildings – residential), rather than Mixed Use. We request that this be taken into account as part of the current resource consent application.
Orange areas are zoned THAB & purple is mixed use. As one can see residentially zoned areas have previously been used for commercial use
We believe no changes should occur without full consultation with Nolan Road residents. The proposed exit road is not appropriate in our opinion, and the burden it would place on our community is unfair & unreasonable without consultation.
We call on the relevant authorities and the relevant supermarket & landlord to consult with the residents of Nolan Road and uphold the protections that have long been in place. Nolan Road is a residential street and should remain that way.
