Stop the school from using Smoothwall

The Issue

I, a student of Cambourne Village College is urging the school to stop using Smoothwall as a web filtering software. Smoothwall is not only ineffective in blocking inappropriate content but also violates our privacy rights.

According to a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, web filters like Smoothwall often block educational content and websites that are essential for research purposes. This means that students are not able to access valuable information that can help them excel academically.

The web has banned multiple links, including YouTube, which is a key factor in my learning. I generally watch YouTube for educational purposes etc. RealLifeLore to learn the Geographical situation right now and tips to write better songs. I think YouTube banned in school is reasonable but I think at home we should we able to access it. Again this can end the need to breach the firewall to watch YouTube in school.

Games can be banned, I understand that this is a learning device. This can further on prevent distractions in class. I also think iPad should be locked by teachers if the lesson does not require iPads to prevent distractions and let students learn better. I just don't think morale will be good at school at all if everything is banned.

The major point and final problem with Smoothwall is the network speed. I have acknowledged that the browser has to download and filter the information, however I don't think my keyboard lagging 3 seconds behind in Google Documents can help me much at all. I think if there are more to negotiate and to make the students feel less violated this can help the students achieve more. The speed is too slow, it is frustrating to everyone.

"For personal uses use your own device" - A lot of people's families struggle a lot in economical terms. Not everyone has a phone or a computer at home. Some have screen limits and further on. The limited use of iPad are frustrating for especially me as I do most of my activity on my iPad. I understand the need to block socal media, but YouTube is a controversial one and personally I need it a lot for learning. If the school wants the respect and support from students, they have to show it first.

I urge the school to consider alternative web filtering solutions etc. Safari and Chrome that prioritize student safety without compromising their academic freedom or privacy rights. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
