Stop the Sand Pipeline and Support Dredging to Preserve Adelaide's Beaches
The issue
Our beautiful unspoilt Adelaide beaches hold a special place in our hearts. We have made precious memories there, embraced the peace offered by the pristine coast, and connected with the rich biodiversity the area supports. However now, these beautiful stretches of sand face a substantial threat: the West Beach sand renourishment program that is due for parliamentary review.
The current plan proposes the introduction of a sand pipeline, a measure which would be extremely destructive to our coastline. This structure threatens 14 kilometers of Adelaide's foreshore, from Largs to Henley Beach, to rescue a mere 1-kilometer stretch of beach. Implementation of the pipeline would impact the social, wellbeing, ecological and economic benefits provided by our beaches. More so, this method is costly and unsustainable, transforming our beloved seaside into sand mining sites, pumping stations and discharge points. The regular discharge of sand slurry which will be rich in nanoplastics is an ecological disaster that cannot be authorised.
There is an alternative - dredging. Dredging is a viable and sustainable way to tackle the issue, and it keeps trucks and graders off our sands, preserving the serenity, safety and beauty of our beaches. Additionally, choosing dredging would prevent nanoplastics from contaminating our marine environment, protecting our precious marine life and ecosystem.
We urge the Cabinet to consider the devastating potential of the sand pipeline, and instead favour the far less invasive dredging option during the West Beach sand renourishment program review. Support our cause and help us save our beloved Adelaide beaches. Sign the petition today.
