The Issue

Why this ban must happen

Wild collection and eco-damage
Hermit crabs sold commercially are almost always wild-caught. Their removal disturbs natural populations, disrupts local ecosystems, and drains shell resources essential to these animals.
Inhumane capture and transport
These animals are often packed densely in bags, jars, or crates with no food, moisture, or ventilation. Many are crushed, suffocated, or lose limbs along the way.
Retail conditions are grossly inadequate
Most shops are unable to replicate the complex needs of hermit crabs—humidity, substrate depth, proper shell availability, proper temperature, safe molting space, fresh + salt water, etc. Many die shortly after being sold.
Painted or altered shells cause harm
The “cute painted shells” often sold alongside hermit crabs interfere with their respiration, molting processes, and may leach harmful chemicals.
Moral responsibility & public education
California has long been a leader in humane, environmental, and wildlife protections. This is an opportunity to set a strong precedent: animals should not be treated as throwaway trinkets.
Existing precedents
West Hollywood, California recently enacted a ban on the sale of hermit crabs (among other small animals).
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina designated hermit crabs as “feral animals,” banning their retail sale.
Illinois has introduced reforms (e.g. HB 3257) to ban painted hermit crab shells as part of an improved humane care act.
These examples show that this is not a radical idea — it is possible and defensible.

These are not “starter pets”—they are delicate creatures with complex needs, unjustly forced into our world for novelty or impulse.

By passing a ban, you will spare countless hermit crabs from needless suffering, protect fragile coastal ecosystems, and affirm that our state values dignity and respect for life—no matter how small.

Thank you for your time, and for the incredible responsibility you carry on behalf of Californians. I would be honored to present further research, evidence, or community support at your convenience.

With hope, respect, and urgency

Thankyou.
