Stop the Rollout of AI Camera Surveillance in Chemist Warehouse Stores
Petition to Sigma Healthcare CEO Vikesh Ramsunder, Chemist Warehouse Managing Partner Mario Verrocchi, and the Board of Sigma Healthcare
Chemist Warehouse has begun trialling wearable AI camera devices in stores, with plans to expand the technology across hundreds of locations by 2027. According to public reporting, these devices continuously scan store environments and collect data as staff move throughout the shop.
Pharmacies are not ordinary retail spaces. Australians visit them for medicines, health advice, prescriptions and products relating to some of the most personal aspects of their lives.
Regardless of the intentions behind this technology, many customers and healthcare consumers are deeply uncomfortable with the expansion of AI-powered surveillance into healthcare retail environments. Public trust depends on privacy, transparency and informed consent.
We call on:
- Vikesh Ramsunder, CEO, Sigma Healthcare
- Mario Verrocchi, Managing Partner, Chemist Warehouse
- The Sigma Healthcare Board of Directors
to immediately pause the rollout of wearable AI camera technology in Chemist Warehouse stores until there has been:
- Full public disclosure of what data is collected.
- Independent privacy and ethical reviews.
- Genuine consultation with customers, pharmacists, staff and privacy experts.
- Clear opt-out options for customers.
- Public release of privacy impact assessments.
Australians should not have to choose between affordable healthcare and their privacy.
If you believe pharmacies should remain places of trust, dignity and respect—not testing grounds for expanding AI surveillance—please sign and share this petition.
