Stop the Renaming of The Polytechnic Ibadan

The Issue

The proposal to rename The Polytechnic Ibadan to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic Ibadan has sparked considerable debate within our community. The institution, which has stood as a beacon of education and innovation since its inception, carries a name rich with history and significance. The Polytechnic Ibadan, established in 1970, is not just a name; it represents an identity, legacy, and a proud academic history that has contributed immensely to education in Nigeria.

Changing its name would not only erase decades of history but also cause confusion and disrupt the branding that the institution has built over the years. Alumni, current students, faculty, and stakeholders find a sense of pride and belonging attached to the existing name. Altering it could potentially undermine the institution’s reputation, affecting its ability to attract prospective students and educators.

The proposed change lacks broad support among the institution’s stakeholders and community members. This move seems to prioritize the honoring of an individual over the collective legacy and achievements of the thousands of students and staff who have dedicated themselves to building The Polytechnic Ibadan's respected status.

We must preserve the historical significance and identity of The Polytechnic Ibadan. Let us stand together to ensure that our beloved institution retains its name, which is a symbol of its storied past and its promise for the future.

Join us in urging His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde (The Executive Governor of Oyo State) to reconsider his decision
