Stop the Removal of Parking Machines Across Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole – Keep Cash

Stop the Removal of Parking Machines Across Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole – Keep Cash
The Issue
BCP Council claims that all car parks in Christchurch and Highcliffe accept cash and card — but this is part of a wider “machine reduction trial” now affecting many areas across Bournemouth, Poole, and beyond.
While a small number of machines have been uncovered and brought back into use, many machines have been covered, removed, or never returned, leaving drivers reliant on mobile apps — even in areas with poor signal or no digital access.
This trial, running until 30 September 2025, has caused confusion, exclusion, and real frustration. Older residents, visitors unfamiliar with app systems, and those without smartphones are being disproportionately affected. Many local businesses fear this could further harm footfall at a time when high streets are already struggling.
Although it's encouraging that some machines are working again, there's no guarantee they'll remain once the trial ends. If we don’t speak up now, BCP Council could decide it’s “too late” or “too expensive” to bring them back.
This isn't about resisting progress — it's about preserving choice and accessibility. Cash and card payments still matter. Removing machines cuts off access for many and creates a barrier to our town centres.
We’re calling on BCP Council to:
👉 Commit to keeping cash and card machines as a permanent option in all car parks across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole
👉 Be transparent about current payment options, with an accurate, up-to-date list available online
👉 Ensure fair and inclusive access to parking — not just for those with smartphones, apps, and strong mobile signal
📣 We’ve already seen how public pressure works — some machines were returned after complaints. Now we need to go further. Let's stop this trial from becoming a permanent cutback.
It only takes 2 minutes to sign. Please help us protect access, support local businesses, and keep our town centres open and welcoming to all.
🪙 Cash is still king — and it should stay that way.
