Stop the QRCC property sale!

The issue

We, the undersigned members, supporters, and stakeholders of The Queensland Russian Community Centre, submit this petition to request that you reconsider and cancel the proposed sale of the property at 19 Lotus Street, Woolloongabba QLD 4102 (currently listed for sale).

Why this property must remain in community hands

1. Community heritage and identity — The Centre has served as a vital hub for the Russian community (and wider multicultural community) for many years. The property represents more than mere real estate: it is a place where cultural ties, social support, traditions, shared history, and community identity are fostered and preserved. Selling it risks irreparable loss of cultural heritage.
2. Not-for-profit mission and social benefit — As a not-for-profit organisation, the Centre provides essential services and supports to vulnerable community members, including recent migrants, elderly people, families, and children. Retaining the property ensures these services continue without interruption.
3. Lack of viable alternatives — There is no confirmed alternative facility that could replace the property’s size, location, accessibility, and suitability for community events, classes, social gatherings, cultural celebrations, and meetings. Selling now would dismantle a community resource without reasonable replacement.
4. Community support and opposition to sale — Many Centre members, families, and community stakeholders strongly oppose the sale. We believe decisions of this magnitude affecting the community asset should not proceed without broad consultation and democratic consent from the membership and community the Centre serves.

We therefore request:

a) That the decision to sell the property be revoked.
b) That the members and community stakeholders be consulted in a transparent process before any further consideration of sale.
c) That, if required, alternatives be explored (e.g., community grants, fundraising, joint partnerships with local councils or organisations) to maintain and preserve the Centre for future generations.

We, the undersigned, stand together in support of this petition, and request that you acknowledge receipt of this petition and advise us of the next steps.

THE QUEENSLAND COMMUNITY RUSSIAN CENTRE INC. PROPERTY IS FOR SALE A Special General Meeting was held at the Queensland Russian Community Centre on the 23rd August 2025, to vote on the proposed Resolution to sell the property at 19 Lotus Street, Woolloongabba. Following the unanimous vote by members present, a decision was made to list the property for sale. All members of the QRCC Inc were duly informed of the processes undertaken and later provided with Minutes of our meeting. The property was officially listed for sale on the 13th October 2025. The process has always been entirely appropriate. The Management Committee has been informed of a recent change.org petition and Facebook entries by members of the ex-patriot Russian community voicing their concerns and listing statements that are deemed to be dis-information. Whilst we acknowledge that members of the general Russian community are entitled to express their concerns, we would like to warn people who incorrectly claim that they are ‘members, supporters and stakeholders’ of the QRCC Inc. to be careful with their comments, particularly in relation to statements made regarding the integrity of the committee or individuals who are responsible for managing the Centre. The Queensland Russian Community Centre would not exist without the tireless work of the Management committee who took over the responsibility in 2019. Their commitment is evidenced by taking it from the inherited bankrupt state to a viable operation conducting all activities such as significant maintenance the Centre, event creation and management and hall hire activities on a volunteer basis. The Centre needs significant renovation and maintenance which is not affordable. All appropriate procedures involving the decision to sell the property have been followed and financial members were duly informed at all times. The management committee does not derive any financial benefit from the sale and our members will decide on where the funds from the sale will be transferred to, likely to be the Russian Benevolent Association for Homes for the Aged. We ask that people be careful in their public comments. Assertions that members of the management committee have behaved inappropriately or will benefit from the sale are entirely false and defamatory.
