We oppose the proposed "temporary" car park in the heart of Sydney's historic Callan Park. Temporary or not, this proposal would introduce around 70 vehicles, day and night, into one of Sydney's most treasured green open spaces used by families and dog owners. It will create unnecessary safety risks while eroding the unique character of this much-loved natural space.

The proposed car park would be located on Supply Road, in the middle of one of the busiest off-leash dog areas in Sydney. For close to 10 years, Supply Road has not functioned as a through-road. Instead, most of the time it’s a quiet pedestrian pathway where families, dog owners, runners and visitors safely enjoy the park's open green spaces. This proposal would fundamentally change that by turning it into a high-traffic vehicle route.

Dogs exercising off-leash are naturally active and unpredictable. Young children also move freely throughout this area. Introducing regular vehicle traffic into the heart of this shared space significantly increases the risk of serious accidents involving dogs, pedestrians and cyclists.

Sadly, these concerns are not hypothetical. Three dogs have already been struck and killed by speeding vehicles within Callan Park. Creating another busy traffic corridor through the park only increases the likelihood of further tragedies.

Supply Road has previously been used for temporary parking by film crews, and park users experienced significant safety issues during those periods. The road's steep gradient further compounds the danger. Callan Park already experiences speeding vehicles accessing sporting facilities. Increasing traffic along this route creates an even greater risk for everyone using the park.

This proposal also contradicts the long-term vision for Callan Park. The Landscape Structure Plan identified the removal of Supply Road as part of improving the park's landscape, reducing vehicle dominance and enhancing the pedestrian experience - not expanding parking or encouraging more traffic through the park.

Historic Callan Park is one of Sydney's most significant public landscapes. It is valued for its heritage, open spaces, natural beauty and community use. This proposal chips away at that vision by replacing peaceful green space with more vehicles, more traffic and more danger. Once roads become established traffic routes, it becomes increasingly difficult to reverse the damage.

The community has voiced their opposition to this proposal, yet Greater Sydney Parklands appears determined to proceed despite overwhelming community concern. The community deserves to be heard, and decisions about the future of Callan Park should reflect the voices of the people who use and care for it every day.

Callan Park should remain a place where people can walk safely, children can play, and dogs can run freely - not become another area sacrificed for vehicle parking.

We urge Minister Scully and the Greater Sydney Parklands Board to abandon the proposed car park on Supply Road and identify alternative parking solutions that do not compromise public safety, threaten the wellbeing of our dogs, or undermine the heritage and integrity of Callan Park.
