🛑 STOP THE MONTROSE QUARRY EXPANSION 🛑- Protect our health, homes, and local environment
Boral is applying to expand the Montrose Quarry by 30 acres, right in the heart of our community. This expansion threatens to bring increased dust, noise, blasting, and vibration to an area already suffering from these impacts.
Dust from quarry operations can contain silica particles, which are recognised as potentially harmful when inhaled. Many residents believe that current dust suppression measures are not always effective — especially on dry, windy days — and that this may put community health at risk. Quarry blasts are already felt in nearby homes, and as the quarry moves closer, residents fear the vibrations and noise will worsen.
Montrose is a community where families live, children play, and native wildlife — including wedge-tailed eagles, echidnas, and wallabies — thrive. Locals are concerned that expanding the quarry will cause lasting environmental damage and destroy important wildlife habitats.
While Boral states that the quarry expansion is necessary to meet demand, community members believe there are alternative supply sites in the region that could meet those needs without expanding operations at Montrose. Residents fear that this proposal prioritises commercial benefit over local wellbeing and environmental protection.
***An Environmental Effects Statement (EES) Has Been Called***
The Minister for Planning has now called for a full Environment Effects Statement (EES) into Boral’s proposed expansion. This is an important step and reflects the seriousness of community concerns.
However, this does not mean the expansion has been stopped.
An EES is a process — not a rejection. The proposal will still be assessed, and the strength of community opposition will play a critical role in shaping the outcome. Now more than ever, we need to remain united, informed, and vocal.
A strong, visible, and organised community response sends a clear message: Montrose residents expect our health, environment, and quality of life to come first.
