Growing up, I was taught that DDS stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery – a respected and globally recognized degree in dentistry. It’s a title that signifies years of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to improving dental health. However, recently, this esteemed acronym has been tainted by the political antics of the Duterte family in the Philippines.

The Duterte family, including current Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte and Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, have co-opted DDS to represent Duterte Die-hard Supporters and Davao Death Squad, a move that stands in stark contrast to the moral and ethical values associated with the field of dentistry. This misuse not only dilutes the meaning of DDS but also associates it with propaganda spreading from human rights violations to allegations of corruption linked to the Duterte family.

For instance, news articles have detailed how the Duterte family faces inquiries and complaints for actions that could be considered severe abuses of power. The International Criminal Court has ongoing investigations concerning human rights violations linked to their regime. Also The Philippine congress has impeached Sara Duterte for misusing the country's budget `

We cannot allow the professional title of DDS to be overshadowed by political misuse all for Sara Duterte to run in 2028 and so Rodrigo Duterte can get away with mass murder. We urge the Philippine congress to enforce a distinction between the honored DDS degree and any political agenda that seeks to exploit it. This misuse misleads and confuses, undermining the dental profession's purpose of promoting health and community well-being.

As a person who knows people who are dentists, we demand respect for the profession and clarity for the public. Let the acronym DDS stand once again only for Doctor of Dental Surgery – a symbol of dedication to health care, not a vehicle for political agendas.
