Stop the Milton-Ulladulla-Burrill Lake bypass route

The issue

For generations, families in Milton-Ulladulla and Burrill Lake have called this region home—homes which stand as a testament to heritage, memories, and the hard work of those who came before us. These aren't just buildings; they are legacy properties, cherished and passed down through generations. It is appalling to imagine a future where this rich tapestry of history could be torn down in favor of a bypass route.

While progress and modern infrastructure are vital for any growing community, they should not come at the cost of erasing history and uprooting families who have lived here for decades. The proposed Milton-Ulladulla-Burrill Lake bypass route promises convenience, but what is the price we are truly willing to pay? Is displacing families, disrupting lives, and demolishing heritage worth shortening travel times?

Experts and planners must explore all alternative routes and solutions that allow for development without sacrificing the character and soul of our beloved towns. Incorporating community feedback in project planning can unveil new possibilities that better balance growth with preservation.

Moreover, comprehensive impact assessments focusing on social, economic, and environmental factors need to be conducted meticulously before any decisions are finalised. According to research, similar projects worldwide have successfully adapted plans in response to public concerns, finding ways to meet developmental needs without engulfing historical communities.

Let's act now to ensure that the beauty and cultural integrity of Milton-Ulladulla and Burrill Lake are not lost to the bypass. By signing this petition, you can help show the local councils and planning bodies that we stand together, demanding thoughtful consideration of all potential impacts and true community engagement. Sign this petition to voice your support for more sustainable and considerate planning solutions that safeguard our homes and heritage.

We, the undersigned residents of the Shoalhaven  and supporters of the Milton–Ulladulla- Burrill Lake community, strongly object to the proposed alignment of the Milton–Ulladulla bypass.

This route would:

 • Destroy family homes and forcibly displace long-term residents.

 • Damage sensitive bushland, creeks, and endangered species habitat.

 • Threaten Aboriginal cultural heritage and historic precincts.

 • Undermine local businesses, tourism, and community life by diverting trade away from town centres.

 • Deliver limited benefit to the Shoalhaven region as a whole, while imposing enormous costs on our community.

We are not against road safety or improved transport.

We are against sacrificing our homes, environment, and heritage for a bypass alignment that has not fully considered safer and fairer alternatives.

We therefore call on the NSW Government to:

 1. Halt the current alignment and compulsory acquisitions.

 2. Release all traffic, economic, environmental and heritage studies in full.

 3. Properly investigate and publicly exhibit alternative routes and smaller-scale safety improvements.

 4. Guarantee fair and transparent consultation with all affected residents.
