The Issue

Montana has just approved a horrifying plan: up to 558 wolves—roughly 40% of the state's estimated population—can be legally killed this season. This isn't wildlife management. It's slaughter.

Wolves are vital to healthy ecosystems. They regulate prey populations, foster biodiversity, and maintain balance in the wild. Yet instead of protecting this keystone species, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has signed off on policies that promote aggressive hunting and trapping—including controversial methods like snares and extended seasons.

Many of these wolves live near Yellowstone National Park, where they are a major draw for tourism and the subject of scientific research. When they cross park boundaries, they’re no longer protected. Last time Montana expanded its hunting quota, Yellowstone’s beloved wolf packs suffered devastating losses.

The agency says this is about balancing wolf populations with livestock and game management. But there’s no solid evidence that hundreds of wolves need to die for that balance to exist. What’s really happening is a political move—one that caters to a small but vocal group calling for fewer predators, even if it means wiping out entire packs.

We, the undersigned, demand that the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission and Governor Greg Gianforte reverse the approval of this season’s excessive wolf hunting quotas. This number is irresponsible, ecologically dangerous, and ethically unacceptable.

Montana has a choice: lead with science and compassion—or return to a time when wolves were nearly wiped off the map. Let’s not repeat history.
