The Issue

We are outraged by President Trump's decision to pardon Paul Walczak, a convicted tax cheat who stole millions from his employees and used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle.

This pardon wasn’t about justice.

It came after Mr. Walczak’s mother, a major Trump donor, attended a $1 million dinner with the president. She had also helped raise millions for Trump’s campaigns and was involved in efforts to smear a political opponent by publicizing a stolen diary.

Just weeks after the dinner, her son was pardoned, erasing $4.4 million in restitution and an 18-month prison sentence.

This is not how our justice system is supposed to work. Pardons should be used to right wrongs, not to reward political allies and wealthy donors.

We call on Congress and the Department of Justice to investigate this deeply unethical pardon and take steps to prevent future abuse of clemency powers. No one should be able to buy their way out of prison.
